Lindsey W. Cooper Jr.

Founder & Partner

Lindsey W. Cooper Jr. is the owner and founder of the Law Offices of L.W. Cooper Jr., LLC. Mr. Cooper specializes in representing business entities and individuals in a variety of tax and corporate transactions. He assists clients who are seeking assistance in tax controversies, tax litigation, and business litigation due to his service as a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division.

While Mr. Cooper was a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division, he represented the IRS in federal courts in the Mid-Atlantic region. In 2004, Mr. Cooper received an Outstanding Attorney Award from the Department of Justice and litigated highly publicized tax shelter cases, including Black & Decker Corp. v. US and Schering Plough Corp. v. US. With his enforcement background, he assists tax planners and accountants in reviewing transactions for tax compliance and tax risk.

Nicholas P. Tierney

Partner

Nick is a partner at the Law Offices of L.W. Cooper Jr., LLC.  Nick’s practice primarily focuses on representing businesses in various corporate and civil matters. He assists clients in navigating asset purchases and sales for a variety of different business industries, day to day corporate matters, handling secured transactions which deal heavily in Article 9 of the UCC, and litigating related business disputes.

Nick also handles all residential and commercial real estate matters at The Law Offices of L.W. Cooper Jr., LLC.  Nick’s real estate practice routinely consists of assisting clients with: (i) residential and commercial real estate transactions of all sizes and nature, including new commercial developments; (ii) drafting and negotiating office, retail, and industrial leasing matters; and (iii) all aspects of navigating and closing commercial loan transactions.

While at the Charleston School of Law, Nick was a member of both the Moot Court Board and the Trial Advocacy Board.  In competition for the Trial Advocacy Board, his team advanced to the Regional Semifinal of the American Association of Justice Competition in Louisville, KY.

Dustin J. Pitts

Partner

Dustin J. Pitts is a partner and represents clients in all facets of tax controversy matters before the South Carolina Department of Revenue, Internal Revenue Service, United States Tax Court, and United States District Court. Dustin’s practice also incorporates business litigation in South Carolina state and federal courts.

Before joining the Law Offices of L.W. Cooper Jr. LLC, Dustin was an associate in a nationally recognized tax controversy and litigation practice where he represented clients in audits and administrative appeals before the IRS and in litigation before the U.S. Tax Court.

Dustin began his career as an Honors Attorney in the IRS Office of Chief Counsel where he represented the IRS in Tax Court litigation as lead counsel and trial team co-chair. In this role, Dustin was recognized as a member of Department of the Treasury Legal Division’s Team of the Year in 2019. Dustin also advised the IRS on individual, corporate and partnership tax, civil tax procedure, penalties, and collection.

During law school, Dustin was the Managing Editor of the Charleston Law Review, Chief Justice of the Moot Court Board, and a member of the winning team of the 2015 National Tax Moot Court Competition.

M. Linsay Boyce

Partner

Linsay is a partner and litigator at the Law Offices of L.W. Cooper Jr., LLC, representing businesses and individuals in a wide variety of legal disputes and transactions. Linsay’s practice concentrates on litigation, where she is experienced in all phases of a case, including trial and appellate practice in state and federal courts in the Carolinas. Linsay has experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants in civil, corporate, estate, and tax controversies. She also represents criminal defendants, primarily focusing on appellate matters.

Linsay is licensed in North Carolina and South Carolina, U.S. Tax Court, and the Fourth Circuit. She is an active member of the North Carolina Bar Association Professional Vitality Committee. During law school, Linsay was an articles editor on the Charleston Law Review and served on the Honor Council.

Erica Van Bavel Olivier

Practice Manager & Enrolled Agent

Erica Olivier joined the Law Offices of L.W. Cooper Jr. in 2009 after graduating from the College of Charleston with a degree in Business Administration and Accounting. She has been an invaluable member of the L.W. Cooper team in a variety of roles since that time, and currently oversees the day-to-day operations of the firm.

Erica is licensed as an Enrolled Agent with the Internal Revenue Service. Enrolled Agents are taxation experts who have unlimited practice rights before the IRS, and are authorized to advise, represent and prepare returns for any taxpayer. Erica assists clients with IRS and SCDOR audits, collection actions and investigations.

In 2010, Erica and Lindsey Cooper formed Broad Street Bookkeeping, LLC to assist clients of the law firm with their bookkeeping and tax issues. Broad Street Bookkeeping now offers small business accounting solutions to clients in a variety of industries. Erica thoroughly enjoys helping clients take control of their internal accounting so they can focus on running their businesses.

Katelynn Grundl

Office Manager

Katie joined the Law Offices of L.W. Cooper Jr. in 2018. As the Office Manager, she assists with firm operations including legal assistance, billing, client management, and other office administrative duties.

A Colorado native, Katie graduated from the University of Wyoming in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.
